Scubaspa Liveaboard - Maldives is Now Open!

The Maldives is Now Open to International Travelers

Scubaspa Ying Liveaboard

Get Our 10% Discount

The Scubaspa ships are as much a floating resort as they are dedicated scuba diving liveaboard ships. The unique concept combines exceptional spa experiences with unforgettable scuba diving. The Scubaspa has been designed for divers who travel with non-diving partners, and guests with a desire for an exceptional spa experience. Scubaspa’s purpose-built yachts explore the picture-perfect islands and divers explore the reefs in the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean.

The liveaboard diving yachts Scubaspa Ying and Scubaspa Yang have been designed to accommodate up to 40 guests. The ships feature 10 cabins and nine suites on each yacht, and are tastefully decorated, all with panoramic sea view or port lights. The cabins are configured with queen, king or twin bed combinations. One suite and one cabin sleep up to three people. All cabins have air conditioning, en suite bathrooms with shower, personal safe, and mini-fridge.

Diving takes place from a tender. Approximately 20 meters in length, the dive boat carries all the equipment, including air compressors and state-of-the-art nitrox; purpose-built for comfort, each has adequate seating, multiple entry points, stern platform, and on-board toilet facilities. Both yachts are the only vessels in the Maldives awarded PADI 5 Star Dive Resort status. Nitrox is available but Scubaspa does not support technical diving or rebreathers.

Cozumel Closes Marine Park Southern Portion

* * * Cozumel Closes Marine Park Southern Portion * * *

The southern part of Cozumel Marine Park will be closed beginning October 7 until at least January, seriously limiting where dive boats can go. If you’re thinking about a trip to Cozumel, you may wish to reconsider. If you already have plans, you may wish to contact your dive operator to see how the closures will affect your diving.

The Marine Park includes the southwest quadrant of the island’s coast. The harder-to-reach northern and eastern sites will still be open, but, because of strong currents, only experienced divers prepared to make what can be lengthy and arduous boat journeys in rough water should consider diving these sites. These include the sites from El Mirador on the more exposed east coast, to Baja de Molas at the most northerly point.

The areas where most diving in Cozumel occurs -- from Palancar Gardens (on Cozumel’s southwest quadrant) to Maracaibo, and Playa Bosh in the extreme south (including dive sites Columbia, Punta Sur, and El Cielo) will be closed so government scientists may investigate the causes of ‘white syndrome’ affecting hard corals there and gauge the amounts and effects of pollution discharged by the large hotels that border the marine park.

Local dive operators say popular sites that can still be accessed by dive boats include Barracuda Reef on the extreme northwest coast, the wreck of the C-52, Tormentos Reef, San Francisco Reef, Santa Rosa, El Cedral, and Punta Delila on the west coast.

White syndrome starts with the coral showing well-defined areas of whitening, which then expand and, apparently spread to all other coral colonies by contact, mainly through divers touching infected coral during dives. Otherwise known as stony coral tissue loss disease, it’s affecting reefs in Florida too.

Solomon PNG Master is a custom designed diving vessel with 12 cabins accommodating up to 20 guests and a crew of 12 including your dive team, skipper, boat crew and chefs. Inside she boasts a huge lounge and dining area with DVDs, large TVs and a dedicated camera area for our photographer guests. Spend time sharing your photos from your adventure, reading a book from our library or just hanging out in air conditioned comfort.

The Solomon Islands comprise 992 islands, of which only 147 are inhabited. Situated to the southeast of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands are one of the most peaceful and beautiful areas of the Pacific. They also have some of the most pristine dive sites in the world. These are filled with innumerable unspoiled hard and soft corals because of the remote location and the limited number of divers. Indulge yourself exclusively in diving with pilot whales, various kinds of sharks, mantas and huge shoals of fish, right down to the macro wonders such as pygmy sea horses, nudibranchs and ghost pipefish. The marine diversity of the Solomon Islands is hard to beat!

FROGFISH BONANZA

The Philippines is already very well known for frogfish, but just lately the sightings keep on coming. From large gray and green ones, to tiny little bright orange ones, the variety is quite astounding. After a dive to Pescador one diver's comment was “they’re hanging off the walls everywhere”. Take a look at some of these very special and unique creatures of the deep. Interesting fact; frogfish have an expanding stomach and can eat a fish twice its size in one gulp, they also have a voracious appetite and will even eat other frogfish. Good thing they don’t grow too big!

Airport Travel Tips

Airport Travel Tips

You may have seen these airport travel tips but they are worth repeating as we get ready for our winter dive travel to tropical destinations.

  • Getting through security checkpoints is always a major hassle. A little preparation can save you time and aggravation. Be mindful of the carry-on restrictions. Before your trip, stock up on small travel-size toiletries that are allowed for carry-on. This may also reduce your bag weight.
  • If you are travelling internationally, weigh your bags before you leave home and again, be mindful of weight limits as they differ from airline to airline. You may also have to weigh your carry-on bags so remember the check specific airline restrictions and weigh your carry-on before you leave for the airport.
  • There are a number of smartphone apps available to help navigate airport terminals. Gate Guru (www.gateguru.com) is a favorite as well as Seat Guru (www.seatguru.com) for getting that seat with a bit more leg room. If travelling through the US, TSA information is also available (http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/).
  • A common trick to save a couple of bucks….carry an empty water bottle. Many airports now have water bottle fill stations near drinking fountains. You can avoid the high price of bottled water at post-security shops and restaurants.
  • Many people are right-handed and tend to choose checkpoint and immigration lines to the right. You may find lines to the left shorter with less of a wait. Of course, signing up for the TSA Pre-check program can also save you time and hassles in security line.
  • We have changed our dive gear bags from soft-side bags with rollers to lighter canvas sport duffel bags and we have saved close to 10 pounds in bag weight. We do need to get luggage carts now but we rarely worry about dive gear weight, and when we  are on a liveaboard with limited storage space, these soft duffel bags compress to save cabin space.
  • Take a photo of your boarding pass with your smartphone. Then you won't have to worry about opening your email program to find the boarding pass. We also take photos of our travel documents, passports, C-cards, and other personal records that might get misplaced. Check out our smartphone app as it has a section just for this purpose (Liquid Diving Adventures on the Apple app store or Google Play).
  • That camera in your smartphone can be used to take pics of your luggage, your parking lot location and other common travel events that you may forget after a week of scuba diving. Use that phone for more than just selfies…!
  • We have started to purchase a bottle of wine or other alcohol at duty free. We don't save much on the cost of the bottle but it can really save on the resort bar tab. You might consider some of the mini-bottles of alcoholic beverages to mix with a free soft drink on the plane. Just remember to pack them in a plastic baggie to get through the security checkpoints. And remember to use caution when bringing alcohol into to some Middle Eastern countries for travel to the Red Sea.
  • If you are not a frequent flyer member and don't have access to Premier Lounges, you may find some clubs will allow for day purchases. It may be worth the extra cost (say 420 to $50) to get out of the crowd if you have a long layover.
