Shaped by movement, purpose and proximity to Earth’s most remote places, the Douglas Mawson was built for adventurers who value access over excess, and exploration over spectacle. Named after famed Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, the ship reflects a legacy of scientific curiosity and resilience. Designed to operate in challenging environments, it supports immersive voyages through Antarctica, the Arctic, and select coastal regions, offering guests a front row seat to landscapes that observe how Earth’s past, present and future coexist.
Engineered for Polar Expedition - The Douglas Mawson is a vessel engineered for performance and comfort across a range of journeys. Its defining feature is the Ulstein X-BOW®, a forward-sloped hull design that reduces impact from waves and improves stability in rough conditions, creating smoother crossings through the most extreme passages. The vessel is rated Polar Class 6 and reinforced for operations in ice, allowing it to safely navigate polar regions while maintaining efficient fuel use. The added comfort of Rolls Royce stabilizers further reduce motion and enhance comfort. On expedition voyages, the ship accommodates up to 130 guests, creating a social, relaxed atmosphere while exploring the world’s polar environments. For small ship journeys, up to 154 adventurers comfortably situate across eight decks that are connected by wide stairways and elevators designed to prioritize visibility, flow, and function. Most staterooms include private balconies, offering personal access to the surrounding environment at all hours. Additionally, onboard our Small Ship Cruises in the Mediterranean, British Isles and beyond, travelers benefit from handcrafted ‘Your Choice’ excursions aimed at increased immersion.
Onboard Experiences and Amenities - Dining aboard the Douglas Mawson is practical, welcoming, and well paced to expedition life. Breakfasts and lunches are designed to fuel active days, with flexible buffet service that allows guests to move easily between meals and excursions. Dinners are more structured, featuring thoughtfully prepared dishes that encourage guests to slow down and reconnect after a day outside. A reservation-only specialty restaurant offers an alternate dining option in a quieter setting. Throughout the ship, tea, coffee, snacks, and soft drinks are available between meals. Social spaces are relaxed and functional, with lounges and bars featuring large windows and open layouts, allowing for reflection and simplicity while observing the passing miracles outside. Outdoor jacuzzis, a heated pool, and sauna provide welcome recovery after long days in cold conditions, while indoor observation areas offer warmth without sacrificing the view.
Expeditions for the Curious Traveler - The Douglas Mawson is designed for travelers who want to actively engage with their destination. Expedition days are structured to maximize both time ashore and aboard the vessel, supported by an experienced team of guides, naturalists, and expedition leaders. Multiple Zodiac boarding points and a dedicated activity platform allow for efficient transitions between ship and shore. This streamlined design minimizes waiting and keeps the focus on exploration. Whether you are experienced in expedition travel or new to this style of journey, activities are guided and paced to support a wide range of abilities and interests.
Exploration Beyond the Ship - Activities vary by region, but consistently emphasize access and participation. In polar environments, guests may experience Zodiac cruising, shore landings, kayaking, snowshoeing, and wildlife observation. Conditions permitting, paddleboarding and polar plunges add optional adventures for those seeking more. Photography is supported through forward-facing observation areas and indoor lounges with unobstructed views to the marvels outside. Educational presentations take place in the onboard lecture theater, offering context on wildlife, geography, climate science, and human history in the regions visited. A Citizen Science Center invites guests to contribute to real research efforts during their voyage.
Unique Voyages for Unique Travelers - The Douglas Mawson is built for those adventurers seeking access to and education of some of the world’s most remote corners. Its design prioritizes stability and safety while maximizing the exploration of some of Earth’s most pristine, untouched regions. This is a vessel for travelers who want their days shaped by landings, learning, and shared experience. If you’re drawn to expedition travel outside of the ordinary offerings you’ve seen in the past, and instead crave exploration of environments often seen as inaccessible, the Douglas Mawson is exactly what you’ve been dreaming of.
